I have been a long time fan of Rocketbook and recently they came out with a new product...cloud cards. This takes index cards to a new level! In the pack you get 40 3x5 index cards (dual sided lined/dot grid), a frixion pen, and a card cleaning cloth. You use the rockebook app to scan the cards and then upload them to your favorite cloud service. So neat!

TutorCam + Overviewer

I came across this new FREE app on twitter today called Overviewer. It is a pretty straightforward app which essentially gives your iphone/ipad a way to become a document camera.
I thought it would be cool to use it with my TutorCamGO and it was. TutorCamGO is a stand for your phone that has a mirror on the back that reflects down to the surface below. TutorCamGO is only $45 and is a super way to make your phone do even more!
I also paired this with this whiteboard notebook I found on amazon (LINK). A great portable way to have a whiteboard with you at anytime!

  • If you are interested they make a TutorCamPRO that holds your ipad ($65)...check out TutorCamPRO

A Teacher of Teachers

I think I am in my dream job ... seriously...

When I started in education 23 years ago, I would have never imagined that my path would lead to my current position. I received my BS degree in music education in 1994. Now, we are in 2016 and I am a tech integrationist. Quite the path, huh?
After a restless night last night, I came to the realization that I am so proud of my new job here at Richland SD that I am almost too excited to sleep at night. Each day, I help more and more people and that invigorates me! In my role, I have become a teacher of teachers. As I coach our teachers and staff in new and exciting ways to integrate tech into their classrooms, I think that I really have found my niche... and that makes me so happy.
We just celebrated thanksgiving last week and I can tell you that I am truly thankful for everyone that has helped me along my path as an educator. All of these wonderful people (fellow teachers, administrators, friends, family, etc.) have truly made an impact on my life!
So, I better get back to that job I love.... more posts to follow! :-)

A Look Back at the Tech Bonanza

This year our first full day inservice within the school year was dedicated to all things technology. All of our teachers from our 5 schools gathered at our High School for a day of learning fun.
I am still the "new person" around here, so I had a little trepidation going into the day, but in the first few minutes of my first session that was all gone. I am so proud to be a part of a staff that appreciates and respects each other for all their strengths (and weaknesses).
As the day went on, we had a great time learning about a bunch of different ways that we can incorporate technology into our existing curricula. By the time the day was finished, I seen people that were so excited about bringing more tech into their classroom. I have been busy with meetings and appointments with teachers and I absolutely LOVE it. The feedback I received from teachers made my heart and soul so happy that I could provide a day of learning that was fun and informational!
I am starting a google session on Monday nights for teachers and we are going to pull an "appy hour" together as well for the 'ipaddlers' in the district.
Such a great day -- a kind of new beginning for our weird/wacky year. I can't wait until the next one!

Love to learn & share "Something New" #AlphaSquirrels

Last week on Thursday, I had the pleasure of having a great GHangout with Emily from Squirrels talking about the Alpha Squirrels program. It was wonderful to hear about her road to her current position and it was good to share my path to my current position as well.
During the hangout, Emily shared some things that Squirrels has planned (but are not public yet, so mums the word). But, she also shared some things that I did not know about Reflector2. Did you know you can cast your chromebook via Reflector2? I sure didn't, but she shared the process with me and I tried it out and it looks and works great.
All you need is Reflector2 on your computer that is connect to a projector and then the GoogleCast extension on your chromebook. Works like a charm!
You should try it out!

A Relatively Tech-Free Weekend

10/10/2016

I am pretty much known as a gadget chick...and truth be told, I really do love all my little fun gizmos! But, every once and awhile, it is a good thing to go sorta "tech-free." Over this past weekend, I participated in the Fermentation Fest in Sauk County. On Saturday, I drove the farm art d'tour. Now, I must admit, I took a few pictures here and there with my iPhone, but I really did not do anything with them yet - there was not a lot of service out in rural Sauk County, so I am looking forward to sharing them.
Then on Sunday, I volunteered with the Fermentation Fest  by assisting two local artists with a pottery class at their studio/gallery in Rock Springs. And yes, I took pictures again, but the busyness of the day coupled with the lack of service meant that my phone stayed in my pocket most of the day.
For me, this was a truly different weekend. It was kinda nice to get away from "the screen" for a couple days. I think that I should try to go "tech-free" more often!
PS - A couple pictures from the fermentation fest are posted below! You can learn more about the Fermentation Fest by visiting their website HERE. #fermfest

DTour stop - getting to play piano in an old quarry in Rock Springs, WI - kind of an acoustical wonder! The piano is housed at a local cafe (Aunt Ozie's in Loganville, WI) check them out HERE.

This year for #fermfest Farm Art DTour, I was selected as one of the featured poets for along the route. My poem (in the "burmashave" form) is:

Bang the drum
Sound the horn
Now is the time
To dance among
The rows of corn

I prepped all the tables and the planks of clay for the participants to make their formed steins and cups. It was great to help there and in the gallery. Find out more about the Byer's Studio/Gallery HERE.

The days & weeks fly by....

OK, let me preface this by saying that I always love it when it is payday, but how can it already be payday again? And on top of it, it is already Friday? Seriously, how did that happen?
I have always thought that the days fly by while I have been a teacher, but even more so in this new job. I suppose it is the adventure of it all...learning new stuff...meeting new people...everything! Each time I roll into the school parking lot I cannot believe that I am so lucky to work in my new school district.
Here's to another great week in the books - cannot wait for the next one!

Reflecting on #EdCampMSP

10/4/2016

It was sure a great weekend in the twin cities...I got to meet up with some great Minnesota folks at a fabulous spot in downtown Minneapolis for a day of learning and sharing at EdCampMSP.
For me, EdCampMSP will always hold a special spot in my development as an #edtech specialist. I changed jobs from an instrumental music teacher to a role in technology 4 years ago. Somehow I came upon the link to register for this thing called an EdCamp in the twin cities area. I registered and then drove the couple hundred miles to the cities...what came next literally changed my life.
I was welcomed into this learning environment where I absorbed so much information that it made me yearn for more. I attended more edcamps all around and learned more and more and MORE. Each time I would come away from an edcamp with a wealth of information that I put into practice in my school. I also was so lucky because I started building a PLN that stretches around the world...having that kind of global perspective on education practices is truly an invaluable commodity.
I would like to thank the hosts of this last edcamp - my pals Lisa & Tom. Thanks to the folks at flipgrid for the amazing space. A special shoutout to the folks at kidblog for taking the time to really explain your product and the way it can be a trans-formative tool for student voice.
So, edcampmsp 2016 is in the books - I am looking forward to my next 2 edcamps at La Crosse and Green Bay in the next month.
If you haven't ever been to an edcamp, you gotta check it out -- it is a life changing experience to be sure.

Speech2Text Baked into Google Docs

9/28/2016

Today, I had a request from a teacher to help a student to find a better way for him to get his thoughts into a Google Doc. And, OF COURSE, google has that all ready for us in Docs!

It is really simple - just choose the tools menu and in there you will find something called Voice Typing. After approving the use of your microphone in chrome, simply click on the mic icon and start talking...and the words start appearing on the screen.

There are also voice commands for punctuation and other doc items (such as starting a new paragraph, etc.).

This is an awesome accommodation for ANY learner! Give it a try!
