EdTech Bake Off (6/23 1-3PM & 6/25 4:30-5:30)

Locations: Playground A (6/23) & Rooms 505/6/7 (6/25)
Picture
Session Description
In this session, I am joined by other edtech chefs from across the country as we come up with solutions that will "satisfy your appetite" from different scenarios given.

Scenario/My Idea
  • Wow the Food Critics with your best creative starter activity for the classroom.
    • Before I shifted into technology, I was a band teacher and my room was always filled with music. So I took those sounds and have translated them into a great appetizer for a class or PD session.
You can find music that fits a theme of your lesson or find fun music from your youth OR popular music of this generation. I like to play my music through Apple Music because it displays lyrics for the songs (always school safe).
  • Impress the Food Critics with your innovative EdTech learning experience in the classroom.
    • Students & the teacher of a homeroom in our Intermediate School wanted a way to express their caring for a fellow student that was losing their sight (ISTE 1.3.d). We came up with using Google Slides, Mote, and 3Doodler (ISTE 1.6.a) to produce a physical and electronic book. The making of the book was creative and used technology & the result was heartfelt and comforting like your favorite soup or stew.  Braille Book Link
  • Impress the Food Critics with explaining how you promote Reflection with learners.
    • So many of my “classroom” experiences are PD sessions with teachers - these can be 1:1, small group, or large group. But, in any case, I always try to incorporate a formal or informal coaching cycle into the experience.
Keeping the lines of communication open AND encouraging learners (of any age) seems to be the ticket to keeping people engaged and hungry for more knowledge!
  • Impress the Food Critics with your ‘one of a kind’ lesson finale.
    • I know this may seem silly, but I always want to leave my learners with a “take-out” of sorts. I am one for sharing my resources and I keep those resources alive on my website forever.
This is a way to keep your learners remembering those great things you shared (and then they can share forward as well)!

SEL Loops (6/24 9-11AM)

Makerspace Playground - Table 1
Session Description
In this session, I'll show you a super easy way to finger knit. And get this, we're not just gonna knit; we're gonna crank it up a notch and use this fun activity to teach some important Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills. Skills like knowing yourself, managing your feelings, and building relationships. Each person will get a piece of yarn, and in less than 15 minutes, you'll walk away with a finished bracelet & a fresh perspective on how to incorporate SEL into your makerspace projects.
Brief Session Outline
The session will give the attendees the basics of finger knitting and they each will be able to create their own bracelet. But, what we are going to do is spin this around a bit and infuse SEL skills in with the finger knitting process. Knitting has been long known to be a great source of calming and can strengthen your skills of self-regulation and managing your feelings. So along with the technical skill of knitting - definitely part of any STEAM/Makerspace - we are also using this time to help students on their SEL journey.

Yarn Used:
  • TShirt Yarn - this is the yarn in the Makerspace Kits
  • I also tried this - it would work as well - chunky yarns are fun!

Tech Coaching...the Ted Lasso Way (6/24 1-1:50PM)

Location: EdTech Coaches Playground - Station E
Session Description
Ted Lasso has become an icon as a coach that amplifies kindness, understanding, and growth in all his relationships. This session is going to examine the ISTE Coaching Standards through the lens of Ted Lasso. Participants will be inspired to renew their passion in being a tech coach.

Brief Session Outline
Now more than ever, tech coaches have become a necessary role in education. But, being a tech coach can be a tough job. Learning how to implement the ISTE standards for being a tech coach can help new and seasoned coaches craft their important role in education.
I will take the Coach standards and flavor them with bits of wisdom from Ted Lasso giving the participants a fresh look at how they can utilize the ISTE standards!
